Republican Congressional District 5 Convention
May 7, 2009
On Saturday May 2, 2009 around 175 delegates met to choose new leadership for the next two years in CD5. The meeting, held at the Robinsdale Middle School, lasted from 8:00 AM to 4:00 pm, far longer than anticipated.
During the officer election portion of the convention, clearly two separate camps were noticeable. An even 50/50 split of convention delegates presented the convention with challenges of voting for new leadership without causing problems. Then the lead candidate running for Deputy Chair surprised the entire convention by stepping down from running for Deputy Chair, stating:
"We clearly have an even split, and in the interest of the convention, DC-5 and the party, I yield to my opponent Adam Wygold." The candidate received a standing ovation for falling on the political sword, and thus uniting the convention.
The election results left Carleton Crawford as Chair and Adam Wygold as Deputy Chair, providing a balance in leadership between old and new Republicans in Congressional District Five.
